Madhya Pradesh is the second largest state in India and is often called the ‘Heart of India’ due to its central location. The state is rich in its culture, tradition and history and the origins of the state can be traced back to 500,000 years back. There are various avenues to explore in Madhya Pradesh for every type of traveller, be it for art, history lovers or adventure seekers.
We start our 3 nights 4 days Bhopal Tour with Bhimbetka Caves from the city of Bhopal. Bhopal is the capital city of Madhya Pradesh which was founded back in 1707. Bhopal has so much to offer to a traveller looking to explore its soul, sights, and sounds. The historic areas perfectly amalgamate with the modern well-planned urban developments. There are two main lakes – the Upper Lake and the Lower Lake, which form the nucleus of the city.
The highlight of this trip is a visit to the Bhimbetka Caves, which is a really unique archaeological site of India. It is a UNESCO World Heritage Site and it has over 750 rock shelters which span over 10kms. According to findings, these shelters were inhabited over a 100,000 years ago and many rock paintings and artifacts have been found which support the theory. The name ‘Bhimbetka’ is derived from the historic tale of Mahabharata, and according to the legends it is said that Bhim, one of the Pandavas sat (‘baitha’ in Hindi) in this place during their exile, and thus, the place got its name ‘Bhimbetka’, the sitting place of Bhim.
The best time to visit for the tourists is during the winter (October to March) and monsoon period (July to September) season as the temperature remains pleasant through the day.
