Lamayuru or Yuru Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery at an elevation of 3,510mts. It holds the distinction of being the Largest and the oldest monasteries in Ladakh with 150 monks residing here. According to legends, Lamayuru Valley was a lake filled with serpents. Arahat Madhyantika, a person responsible for spreading Buddhism made some offering to the Nagas here and with the crack of his walking stick, a hole was made and all the water was drained out. Since that incident, the place is considered holy and sacred.  Leh, the highest plateau in the Himalayas of India is a desert city, is the capital of northern India’s Ladakh UT(Union Territory). Originally a stop for trading caravans, Leh is now known for its Buddhist sites and nearby trekking areas.
