Kargil is a town which lies in the Kargil district in the union territory of Ladakh. It is the second largest town in Ladakh after Leh and it lies at an elevation of 2,676 mts. While in Kargil, visit Sonmarg and Baltal valley and also the Zoji La Pass, the highest mountain pass in the Kashmir valley. Other famous stopovers while going from Kargil to Leh are Namika la, Fotu La, which is a mountain pass lying in Zanskar Range of the Himalayas at an elevation of 4,108mts.
Lamayuru or Yuru Monastery is a Tibetan Buddhist Monastery at an elevation of 3,510mts. It holds the distinction of being the Largest and the oldest monasteries in Ladakh with 150 monks residing here. According to legends, Lamayuru Valley was a lake filled with serpents. Arahat Madhyantika, a person responsible for spreading Buddhism made some offering to the Nagas here and with the crack of his walking stick, a hole was made and all the water was drained out. Since that incident, the place is considered holy and sacred. Leh, the highest plateau in the Himalayas of India is a desert city, is the capital of northern India’s Ladakh UT(Union Territory). Originally a stop for trading caravans, Leh is now known for its Buddhist sites and nearby trekking areas. Massive 17th-century Leh Palace, modeled on the Dalai Lama’s former home (Tibet’s Potala Palace), overlooks the old town’s bazaar and mazelike lanes. This Leh Ladakh tour package offers a unique travel experience and adventurous journey altogether.
Being the northernmost part of the country it extends from the Himalayas to Kunlun Ranges and also includes the upper Indus River valley. Ladakh region is divided into two districts, Leh and Kargil. Ladakh is a sparsely populated region but is dominated by people following Buddhism and Islam.
The word Ladakh means Land of High Passes. It is also called the Moon-Land and the Cold Desert because of its barren topography and extreme temperature during the night and in winters. After crossing Khardungla Pass, which is the highest motorable road in the world, we visit Nubra Valley, which is located at an altitude of 3,048mts. It is a high altitude cold desert, which means it has scant vegetation and green cover. Wherever your eyes go, you’ll see vast barren lands, covered with sands and rocks which gives it a surreal look.
Diskit Monastery is the oldest and largest monastery in the Nubra Valley, with origins going back to the 14th century. Diskit Gompa is also famous for the statue of a protector deity (Kali) holding the head and arm of a medieval Mongol soldier. Hunder is famous for its sand dunes and “Bactrian camels”, also known as Double humped camels. The area near Hunder is quite barren, but once you enter Hunder, it is quite green and there are many farms and cultivable land available here which makes it a soothing experience for your tired eyes. The highlight of this trip definitely is a visit to two of the highest altitude lakes in the world, Pangong and Tso Moriri.
Pangong Lake is situated at an altitude of 4,350mts and is a saline lake. It is 134kms long and extends from India into China. The lake is so beautiful and serene with its calm, glimmering blue water, that many Bollywood movies have been shot here, most famous being 3 Idiots. The crystal clear waters of the lake shine in many shades of blue depending upon its depth and with the sunlight. Tso Moriri, another surreal saline lake is located at 4,522mts and in Tibetan Language is known as “Mountain Lake”. Stunning reflections of nearby mountains and white clouds set against the clear blue sky make Tso Moriri seem like a giant mirror and one of the not-to-miss places to visit in Ladakh trip. Hop on this adventurous Leh Ladakh trip and treasure memories with your family and friends.
