Have you ever dreamed of standing in one place and seeing four of the world’s tallest mountains at once? The Sandakphu Trek in West Bengal promises exactly that—a surreal journey where adventure meets tranquility, and every step brings you closer to some of the most breathtaking panoramas on Earth. Nestled along the Indo-Nepal border within the pristine Singalila National Park, this six-day trek is a perfect blend of high-altitude vistas, cultural encounters, and Himalayan wilderness, making it a must-do for trekkers, nature enthusiasts, and photography lovers alike.
The adventure begins with a drive from NJP Railway Station or Bagdogra Airport to Manebhanjan, a quaint town known for its vintage Land Rovers and as the traditional gateway to the Sandakphu trail. From here, travelers proceed to Jaubari, a peaceful hamlet with colorful hillside homes, terraced farms, and serene mountain views. With minimal local facilities, trekkers are advised to carry all essentials, while the evening at a local homestay provides a chance to acclimatize and soak in the calm, scenic surroundings.
On the second day, the trek leads to Tumling along scenic village paths and forest trails. Trekkers pass through charming settlements such as Chitrey, with its monastery near the Nepal border, Lamaydhura, a Tibetan hamlet dotted with tea stalls, and Meghma, known for its monastery and local dhabas. The trail uniquely crosses the Indo-Nepal border multiple times, offering glimpses into both cultures. Nature lovers may spot barking deer, colorful birds, and even the elusive red panda along the way. Tumling, perched amidst the hills, offers sweeping views of the Kangchenjunga range, often referred to as the Sleeping Buddha, making it a perfect spot to unwind and enjoy the mountain serenity.
The journey continues on the third day toward Kalapokhri, a small village within Singalila National Park. The 13-kilometer trek passes through stone-paved trails, forested paths, and stair climbs, with occasional glimpses of Mount Everest on clear days. The steep ascent near the village leads to the mystical Black Lake of Kalapokhri, draped in prayer flags, where trekkers can relax and soak in the spiritual ambiance of the Himalayas.
Day four brings the ultimate reward: the climb to Sandakphu, the highest point in West Bengal at 11,941 feet. The trail passes Bikheybhanjang, famously called the “Poisonous Valley” for its Aconite plants, before the final 200-meter steep stretch to the summit. From Sandakphu, trekkers are treated to an unparalleled panorama of four of the world’s tallest peaks—Everest, Kangchenjunga, Lhotse, and Makalu—a view that defines the trek as the “Trekkers’ Paradise.”
The descent from Sandakphu to Gurdum covers lush forests, rhododendron groves, and quiet mountain villages. This 10-kilometer stretch offers scenic viewpoints and opportunities to capture the natural beauty of the region. Gurdum’s lodges and campsites provide a comfortable overnight stay, allowing trekkers to rest before the final place of the trek. On the last day, a short 6-kilometer trek takes travelers to Srikhola, a riverside village that marks the end of the trekking route, followed by a drive of approximately 140 kilometers back to NJP or Bagdogra.
The Sandakphu Trek is more than just a hiking trail; it is a journey into the heart of the Himalayas. With its awe-inspiring peaks, cultural encounters, wildlife sightings, and tranquil villages, it promises a once-in-a-lifetime experience for anyone seeking adventure, serenity, and the magic of the mountains.

Sandakphu is considered a moderately challenging trek. Hikers face long distances daily across changing Himalayan terrain, with steep inclines as they approach the summit. The trek reaches nearly 12,000 ft, requiring stamina and preparation to handle thin air, chilly nights, and basic lodges. Fit first-timers with training can complete it, but both the physical demands and unpredictable mountain weather can test one’s endurance.
The Sandakphu trek generally covers 60 to 70 km in total, depending on the exact route and whether the trek includes Phalut. Most itineraries range from 6 to 8 days and involve daily walks of 10–15 km across forests, ridges, and mountain villages. The trail follows the Singalila Ridge, weaving in and out of India and Nepal, with moderate difficulty and memorable views of the Eastern Himalaya.
The best season for Sandakphu is March–April for flowers or late September–November for views. Spring displays rhododendrons, while autumn after the rains offers crystal-clear skies and distant snowy peaks. Avoid monsoon months due to landslides and muddy trails, and note that winters are icy, best left to trekkers with cold-weather experience and gear.
Guides are now compulsory for the Sandakphu trail under local and forest rules. Trekkers must register with a licensed guide at Manebhanjan or the entry villages for permits and to proceed legally. Forest officials check at multiple points and may deny entry to groups without an approved guide, so solo or independent trekking is not allowed as of the latest regulations.
Travelers can reach Sandakphu by rugged 4WD vehicles such as older Land Rovers, hired from Manebhanjan. Private cars and standard SUVs are unsuitable due to the difficult, rocky, and steep final stretch. The drive up takes several hours and is bumpy and sometimes treacherous, especially during rains, but offers a scenic, adventurous option for those not trekking.
