Ever wondered what it feels like to walk through completely different worlds on a single trek?
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is one of India’s most dramatic crossover journeys, taking you from the lush green valleys of Kinnaur to the stark, rugged landscapes of Spiti’s Pin valley. Along the way, you’ll pass through forests, meadows, high-altitude camps, and river deltas, experiencing a mix of natural beauty, geology, and culture. With changing landscapes every day, the trek challenges your body and delights your senses, offering adventure, serenity, and unforgettable Himalayan views. It’s a journey where every step feels new, inspiring, and deeply rewarding.
The Pin Bhaba Pass trek covers roughly 50–51 km of distance and usually takes 6 to 9 days, depending on acclimatization and weather.
The route is beautifully diverse, moving from Shimla to Kafnu, then through Mulling, Kara, Phutsirang, crossing the Pin Bhaba Pass, and descending to Mud village in Spiti. From here, you can continue toward Kaza and even Chandratal before exiting via Manali, but that’s subject to weather conditions.
July to mid-September is the best time for the Pin Bhaba Pass. Here’s why ;-
The trek starts from Kafnu, a quiet Himalayan village in Kinnaur Valley, sitting at around 7,900 feet. Reaching Kafnu itself feels like entering a different world after a long drive from Shimla. This is where you step into the green Bhaba Valley, walking through forests, rivers, and meadows before climbing to the high pass at 16,100 feet.
Pin Bhaba Pass is located in Himachal Pradesh and connects the lush Bhaba Valley of Kinnaur with the Pin Valley of Spiti. Every single day looks different, which is why this trek is often called the most dramatic pass crossing trek in India.
Pin Bhaba Pass stands tall at about 16,100 feet (4,910 meters), crossing from lush Bhaba Valley to the arid Pin Valley in Spiti. With steep climbs, varied terrain, and big altitude changes, it’s a challenging but rewarding adventure, so be prepared, fit, and ready to embrace the Himalayas fully.
This trek demands good preparation and strong fitness. The pass-crossing day itself can take 10–11 hours, with a steep 3,000-foot climb and an equally demanding descent. The Spiti side has long stretches of moraines and boulders that test balance and stamina. Add to that a 16 km walk to the final road head, and you’ll understand why fitness matters. Come prepared, and the challenge becomes incredibly satisfying.

The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is located in Himachal Pradesh, connecting the lush green valleys of Kinnaur with the cold desert region of Spiti. The trek starts from Kafnu village near Shimla and ends at Mudh Village in Spiti Valley, crossing the high-altitude Pin Bhaba Pass at 16100 feet.
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is a 7 to 8-day adventure, covering approximately 50-51 kilometers. The actual trekking duration is around 5–6 days, while the remaining days include road travel. The trek reaches a maximum altitude of 4,900 meters, making it moderately challenging and ideal for experienced trekkers.
While it is possible to do the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek solo, it is not recommended unless you are highly experienced in high-altitude trekking. The route is remote, weather conditions can change suddenly, and there are limited rescue facilities. Trekking with a certified guide or group is the safest option.
To reach Pin Bhaba Pass, first travel to Shimla by road or train. From Shimla, drive to Kafnu village via Rampur, which takes about 7–8 hours. Kafnu is the starting point of the trek. The trek then continues through Mulling, Kara, and Phutsirang before crossing the pass.
The best time to do the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is from July to September. During this period, the weather remains stable, snow has melted enough to allow safe passage, and the landscapes are at their best. Monsoon clouds add beauty, while late summer offers clearer mountain views.
No, a cloakroom facility is not available on this trek. Since the route starts at one point and ends at another, arranging luggage transfer becomes logistically challenging. We recommend packing light and carrying only essential items required for the trek to ensure a comfortable and hassle-free experience.
The trek is an 8-day, 51 km Himalayan trek that starts in Kinnaur's lush meadows and ends in the barren landscapes of Spiti. With a moderate to difficult rating, it's ideal for those seeking adventure and contrast in their journey.
The Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is not ideal for absolute beginners. It involves high altitude, long trekking hours, river crossings, and steep ascents. Prior Himalayan trekking experience and good physical fitness are strongly recommended for safety and enjoyment.
Chandratal Lake is usually included as an add-on while exiting via Manali, subject to weather and road conditions. A short hike from the parking area leads to the lake, making it a rewarding extension of the trek experience.
You need strong cardiovascular endurance and leg strength for this trek. Regular running, stair climbing, and backpack training are essential. The long pass-crossing day, high altitude, and rough terrain demand consistent fitness preparation before attempting the trek.
The weather on the Pin Bhaba Pass Trek is unpredictable. Expect sunny mornings, sudden rain or snowfall near the pass, cold nights, and strong winds. Temperatures can drop below freezing at higher camps, especially near Phutsirang and the pass.
