“This review is regarding Zanskar expedition. Zanskar Valley(Ladakh) is a remote location. The trip was very well managed and taken care of. Captain Shubham and Ashish really made sure that everyone is at good health as ladakh is at higher altitude. They provided all the information in the briefing. I had a great trip. Feedback - Kargil stay(caravan sarai) wasn’t good. It would be great if they change it as it wasn’t hygienic.”

Overview

The Zanskar Valley Backpacking Trip for 8 days is an extraordinary journey into one of the most remote and untouched regions of the Indian Himalayas. It is curated for travelers who seek raw landscapes, adventure, and cultural immersion, this 8-day expedition takes you from the bustling streets of Delhi to the serene valleys of Zanskar, offering an experience that feels both thrilling and deeply peaceful.

From the high mountain passes and glaciers to ancient villages and pristine river valleys and monasteries this journey promises unforgettable memories at every turn.

The adventure begins with an overnight road journey from Delhi to Manali, gradually transitioning from city life to the calm of the mountains. As the route passes through Chandigarh, Bilaspur, and Mandi, the scenery changes dramatically — from plains to pine forests and finally to towering Himalayan peaks. The overnight drive adds to the excitement, setting the tone for the incredible journey ahead.

Upon reaching Manali, the journey continues toward the enchanting Lahaul Valley. Crossing the iconic Atal Tunnel, one of the longest highway tunnels in the world, feels like entering a completely different landscape. Lush greenery slowly transforms into rugged terrain as you move closer to the high Himalayas. En route, the picturesque Sissu Village and its cascading waterfall offer stunning photo opportunities and a refreshing break. The day concludes at Jispa, a serene riverside village surrounded by snow-capped mountains, making it an ideal stop to relax and acclimatize.

From Jispa, the expedition takes a more adventurous turn as the route heads towards the remote interiors of Zanskar via the Gombo Rangzan route. This less-traveled road is one of the highlights of the journey, offering untouched beauty, deep gorges, and vast mountain expanses. The sense of isolation here is surreal, allowing travelers to truly disconnect from the modern world. Small Himalayan settlements along the way offer a glimpse into the simple yet resilient lifestyle of the locals. The journey ends at Purne, a quiet village surrounded by raw natural beauty.

The drive from Purne to Padum, the heart of Zanskar Valley, is equally mesmerizing. Vast open landscapes, rugged cliffs, and endless mountain views dominate the scenery. Padum serves as the cultural and administrative center of the region and reflects the true essence of Zanskari life. The town’s peaceful environment, traditional architecture, and spiritual vibe make it a perfect place to unwind and explore.

One of the most memorable parts of the journey is the excursion to Drang Drung Glacier and Pensi La Pass. The glacier, with its massive icy formations and dramatic surroundings, is a breathtaking sight and one of the largest in Ladakh. Crossing Pensi La Pass offers panoramic views of snow-covered peaks and endless valleys, making it a dream destination for photographers and nature lovers. The experience of standing at such a high-altitude pass, surrounded by silence and grandeur, is truly humbling.

The return journey retraces the scenic route back toward Jispa, offering another chance to soak in the raw beauty of Zanskar Valley. Flowing rivers, winding mountain roads, and vast open skies accompany you throughout the drive. Each turn reveals a new perspective of the Himalayan wilderness, making even the long drive deeply rewarding.

The journey finally takes you to Manali and onward to Delhi via an overnight drive. As you descend from the mountains, the memories of dramatic landscapes, remote villages, glacier views, and peaceful valleys stay with you long after the trip ends.

This Zanskar Valley Backpacking Tour is perfect for adventure seekers, nature lovers, photographers, and travelers who want to explore beyond the usual tourist trails. With its blend of high-altitude passes, cultural richness, and untouched beauty, the journey offers an authentic Himalayan experience that few places in India can match.
