The Leh Ladakh 9 Days Backpacking Tour with Hanle-Umling-La-Tso Moriri is an action-packed, adventurous journey that takes you deep into the heart of Ladakh, offering a perfect blend of rugged landscapes, high-altitude experiences, and cultural immersion. This tour is ideal for backpackers looking for a mix of adventure, scenic beauty, and a taste of Ladakhi culture, with a special focus on some of the region’s most remote and breathtaking destinations, including Hanle, Umling La, and Tso Moriri Lake.
Your journey begins with your arrival in Leh, the main gateway to Ladakh. After a day of rest to acclimatize to the high altitude, you’ll head out on a sightseeing tour around Leh, visiting iconic spots such as Magnetic Hill, where gravity seems to defy the laws of physics, Sangam, where the Zanskar and Indus rivers converge, and Shanti Stupa, an important Buddhist monument offering stunning panoramic views of the surrounding landscapes. You’ll also visit Gurudwara Pathar Sahib, a sacred site for Sikhs, and The Hall of Fame, a military museum dedicated to the soldiers who fought in the Kargil War. In the evening, you’ll have the opportunity to explore Leh’s local markets, cafes, and shop for souvenirs.
The next leg of the tour takes you to Nubra Valley, a lush oasis surrounded by deserts, sand dunes, and snow-capped mountains. You’ll reach Nubra via the legendary Khardung La Pass, one of the highest motorable roads in the world. Once in Nubra Valley, you can explore the Hunder Sand Dunes, where you can ride Bactrian Camels, indulge in ATV rides (on a personal expense), and enjoy the surreal desert landscape with snow-capped peaks in the backdrop. A night under the stars in your camp will provide an authentic and memorable Ladakhi experience.
From Nubra, you’ll head to Pangong Lake, one of the most iconic destinations in Ladakh, known for its crystal-clear blue waters and majestic surroundings. Along the way, you’ll stop at the Diskit Monastery, home to the towering 100-foot Buddha statue. Upon reaching Pangong Lake, you’ll check into your accommodation and have time to explore the lakeside. You can also take in the incredible beauty of the area and indulge in stargazing under the clear Ladakhi sky, making for an unforgettable experience.
Next, you’ll travel through the picturesque Changthang Valley towards Hanle, a remote and lesser-known region of Ladakh. Hanle is home to India’s largest astronomical observatory and offers some of the clearest skies in the world, making it a haven for stargazers. You’ll also have the chance to visit the Hanle Monastery, which holds great cultural significance in the region. The rugged beauty of the Changthang Plateau and the remote villages along the way provide a true sense of isolation and tranquility.
The highlight of the trip is the thrilling journey to Umling La, the world’s highest motorable pass, sitting at an elevation of 19,024 feet. The ascent to this remarkable pass is both challenging and exhilarating, with steep climbs, sharp turns, and breathtaking vistas. Once at the top, you’ll be rewarded with panoramic views of the barren landscape that stretches for miles. This is an adventure of a lifetime, and conquering Umling La will be a major achievement.
After conquering Umling La, you’ll continue to Tso Moriri Lake, a high-altitude lake that is less frequented by tourists, making it a perfect spot for those seeking peace and solitude. Surrounded by snow-capped mountains and rolling hills, the lake offers serene beauty that will leave you speechless. You can take a walk around the lake, explore the nearby villages, and enjoy the calmness of the area.
Tso Moriri is one of Ladakh’s hidden gems, offering a more peaceful and untouched landscape compared to the more popular destinations in the region. On your way back to Leh, you’ll pass through several picturesque spots, including the charming Chumathang Village, famous for its hot springs, and Shey Palace, an ancient palace that offers a glimpse into the region’s royal history. Thiksey Monastery, with its stunning architecture and panoramic views, is another stop that provides insight into Ladakhi Buddhist culture.
The final day of the tour is a bittersweet farewell as you depart from Leh after spending a truly unforgettable 9 days in one of the most unique regions in the world. This backpacking tour not only takes you to some of the highest and most remote locations in Ladakh but also offers an authentic experience of the region’s culture, traditions, and natural beauty.
This 9-day backpacking tour with Hanle, Umling La, and Tso Moriri is perfect for adventure seekers, nature lovers, and anyone who wants to experience the thrill of high-altitude biking, motorable passes, and camping under the stars while exploring the incredible landscapes of Ladakh. Whether you’re looking for a challenge, a chance to connect with nature, or a deep cultural experience, this tour has something for everyone.
