In this Spiti Winter Expedition, we not only take you on an adventure of a lifetime but also allow you to celebrate Christmas and New Year with a blast. It is no secret that the roads of Spiti valley offer unpredictable experiences and yet there is no greater feeling than off-roading on these tough terrains.
We commence our trip from Delhi to Shimla. The route from Shimla is better when it comes to Spiti winter expeditions. One of the reasons is the landscapes but also because the gradual ascend to higher altitude will make your body acclimatize as well. Our first stop is Chitkul which is popularly known as the last village of India and has gained a lot of popularity among travelers. Our next stop on this Christmas and New year special 4x4 edition is Kalpa which is known for its picturesque landscapes. The town of Reckong Peo in Kinnaur, famous for its apple orchards and rich culture that has been preserved by the locals for years serves as the ideal pit stop. Upon reaching Kalpa, we make sure that you visit the true gems of Kalpa including the 1000-year-old Kalpa monastery and the suicide point which is named so because of the fear it induces in the heart of the travelers with its cliff and narrow roads. Not to mention that on one end, standing mighty are rugged mountains. The view from the suicide point is to die for and since during this winter expedition to Spiti valley, the entire Kinnaur ranges will be covered in snow, the landscape would be more beautiful than words can ever describe. After spending a night in Kalpa, we will head toward our next destination which is Nako. Providing the ideal pit stop is the tiny hamlet of Khab which serves as the confluence of the Sutlej and Spiti rivers. Even though it is just a stop along the way, driving through a snow-covered Khab makes it one of the best parts of this Spiti winter expedition.
Our next stop, Nako which is a tiny hamlet nestled in the heart of the trans-Himalayan ranges provides immense peace to travelers. The tiny hamlet is situated on the Indo-China Border with the serene Nako lake and the ancient Nako monastery in its embrace. Our next destination Kaza is where you will see a blend of all the glorious landscapes that Spiti Valley has to offer. The monochromatic contrast of the whiteness of the snow against the cobalt blue skies is truly breathtaking. Kaza is known for its rich culture and age-old monasteries. As well as being the heart of Spiti, it is also the commercial center of the valley and the link between the different districts. In our Spiti sightseeing tour, we'll visit the Key Monastery, The Chicham Bridge which is the highest in Asia and is situated 1000 ft above a deep gorge that flows relentlessly. Komic, which is truly one of the most beautiful villages as well as the highest village in the world connected by a motorable road. We'll also visit Hikkim which is the highest post office in the world. We save the best for the last. Langza, the fossil village serves as the last stop of our Spiti winter expedition. Located on top of a hill, is the statue of Budhha that locals believe protects them from all evil. Is this Christmas and New Year Spiti Expedition safe for a female solo traveler?

What is the actual distance between Lahaul- Spiti and Delhi by road?
If you're going by road and choosing the Shimla route from Delhi then it would take approximately 18 hours of driving for you to reach there if you don’t make many pit stops but that’s entirely up to you. Now, if you're taking the Manali route then at least 24 hours in the car, driving is required and you need to make a pit stop after reaching Manali or you'll be very much exhausted otherwise. The total distance between Lahaul Spiti and Delhi is 708 Kilometers if we go by the shortest route.
What is the distance between Kaza and Spiti?
Kaza is an administrative town. So, in terms of distance, there's no proper way to measure it. But once you enter Spiti Valley, you'll soon find Kaza there after a short distance of 4-5 kilometers.
When is Spiti Valley open?
Routes to Spiti Valley are open all around the year, but there is little distinction. While the Shimla route is open all around the year, the Manali route closes for a brief time due to the closing of Kunzum Pass. Moreover, the Manali route is open from June to October.
How cold is it in Kaza during winters?
The weather in Kaza, Himachal Pradesh, affects the oncoming tourists as it gets extremely cold during winter. But it’s good for the locals, as water is scarce, locals rely on the heavy snowfall for a resource of water and use the same when the cropping season begins. The average maximum temperature remains around 4-5 degree Celsius in Kaza, in the winter months of November and December.
How to travel from Delhi to Spiti by flight?
The distance between Delhi and Lahaul Spiti is 712 Kilometers. There are no airports on the route that you take while traveling to Spiti. You're recommended to take flights from wherever you are coming to Delhi only. After that, you need to move on the road in a 4x4 car or tempo traveler. If you think that the distance between Delhi to Spiti valley is way too much for you in terms of a road trip then you can land in Chandigarh which is a little closer to Spiti Valley and will shorten your road trip by a couple of hours.
What does a 4x4 expedition to Spiti Valley mean?
In the 4x4 Spiti expedition, we take things up a notch. Instead of a tempo traveler, we embark on this journey with a four-wheeler vehicle, like the Thar or Maruti Gypsy. There are two routes to reach Spiti. One is via Manali while the other is via Shimla.
