Thailand is taking its Diwali celebrations up a notch this year, turning the festival of lights into a month-long tourism attraction for Indian travellers. With festivities planned across Bangkok, Pattaya and Phuket, the country is looking to strengthen its position as one of India’s most popular international holiday destinations.
The Amazing Thailand Grand Diwali Festival 2026 will feature seven major events between November 3 and November 29. While Diwali celebrations are not new to Thailand, this year’s edition will be significantly larger, spanning more locations and a longer festive period.
According to the Tourism Authority of Thailand (TAT), the initiative aims to bring the festival to an international audience while encouraging more Indian visitors to experience Diwali in the country.
What to Expect from Thailand’s Diwali Celebrations in 2026?
The month-long festival will bring together cultural performances, traditional rituals and festive experiences across three major Thai destinations.
Some of the planned highlights include:
- Bangkok: Traditional diya-lighting ceremonies at Central Bang Rak and riverside fireworks at River Park, ICONSIAM.
- Pattaya: A special Diwali Day celebration at Central Festival Pattaya Beach.
- Phuket: An Indian food festival at Central Festival Patong, bringing Indian culinary experiences to the island.
Thailand’s leading retail groups are also joining the celebrations, with special promotions and shopping privileges planned throughout the festive season.
The celebrations are being organised by the Indian Association of Thailand and the Thai–India Trade & Tourism Association, in collaboration with the Tourism Authority of Thailand, the Indian Embassy in Bangkok, the Bangkok Metropolitan Administration and other partners.
Thailand Targets 2.5 Million Indian Visitors in 2026
India remains one of Thailand’s most important international tourism markets. The country welcomed approximately 2.2 million Indian visitors in 2025, returning to the pre-pandemic average of more than two million arrivals annually.
In 2026, Thailand has set a target of attracting 2.5 million Indian tourists. By September this year, approximately 1.911 million Indian travellers had already visited the country.
The expanded Diwali celebrations are expected to give tourism another push, particularly as many Indian families traditionally plan international holidays after the festival.
Rising Airfares Pose a Challenge for International Travel
Despite the positive tourism outlook, rising airfares and geopolitical uncertainties are affecting outbound travel demand from India.
The ongoing conflict in the Gulf region and increasing fuel prices have contributed to higher flight costs, making international holidays more expensive for Indian travellers.
Anil Punjabi, Chairman (East), Travel Agents Federation of India (TAFI), highlighted that Thailand continues to be a popular post-Diwali destination for Indians. However, he also pointed out that expensive airfares are affecting travel demand and called on Thai tourism authorities to consider more affordable airfare and hotel packages for Indian visitors.
Why Thailand Continues to Attract Indian Travellers
From Bangkok’s bustling shopping districts to Pattaya’s entertainment scene and Phuket’s tropical beaches, Thailand offers a mix of experiences that appeal to different kinds of travellers.
Its relatively convenient connectivity from major Indian cities, diverse accommodation options, vibrant food culture and range of experiences make it a popular choice for short international holidays.
With nearly a month of Diwali festivities planned across three destinations, Thailand is adding another reason for Indian travellers to consider an international getaway this festive season.
