Overview

Are you craving an escape from the constant chaos of honking horns, traffic jams, and polluted skies? Imagine trading all that noise for the whisper of alpine winds, the sight of lush green meadows, and the sound of a crystal-clear river flowing beside you. If that sounds like your kind of break, Chitkul should be right at the top of your bucket list.

Standing at an altitude of 11,319 feet, Chitkul is the last inhabited village of India, situated close to the Indo-Tibet border in Himachal Pradesh. But what truly sets it apart isn’t just the height—it’s the peace. There are no mobile towers here. That means zero notifications, zero distractions—just you, the mountains, and the kind of calm that’s hard to find in today’s world.

Now, let’s add a touch of adventure to this serene escape. At JustWravel, we bring you closer to Chitkul in the most exciting way possible—with a curated road trip experience with breathtaking scenic routes, expert trip captains, and that perfect mix of thrill and tranquility. We've mapped the journey so you don’t have to—just hop on and let the Himalayas do the rest.

They say it’s not just about the destination—it’s about the journey. And we’ve made sure you don’t just find joy when you arrive, but feel it in every mile along the way.

Our 3 days adventure begins in Delhi, heading first to Shimla, covering 342 km in an overnight journey. From there, the real magic unfolds as you hop into a tempo traveler and ride through Kufri, Narkanda, Rampur, Sangla, and Rakcham, with stunning views of the Karcham Dam and the mighty Sutlej River along the way. It is a journey that beautifully transitions from lively hill station vibes to serene Himalayan wilderness.

Starting at Kufri, travelers experience refreshing mountain air amidst pine-covered hills and sweeping valley views, a lively introduction that gently eases one out of city life.

Moving onward to Narkanda, the atmosphere shifts to tranquil apple orchards and high peaks where panoramic views reward nature lovers and forest walks provide peaceful respite. By the time you reach Rampur, the Sutlej River valleys unfold alongside vibrant markets and temples, showcasing authentic Himachali culture and offering a lively yet relaxing stop for meals and breaks.

As the road winds into the Baspa Valley, Sangla emerges as a gateway to more secluded adventures with its charming wooden houses, Kamru Fort’s historic allure, and a palpable Kinnauri cultural essence among green meadows and mountain peaks.

Close by, Rakcham enchants with natural beauty and preserved traditions, where ancient temples and Buddhist shrines echo the region’s spiritual fabric. This progression culminates in Chitkul. After covering a distance of 225 km in nine hours of soul-stirring landscapes, you’ll arrive in Chitkul Village—where stillness greets you with open arms. The entire road trip is a seamless blend of diverse landscapes, vibrant culture, and peaceful retreats, making it a captivating experience at every turn.

In Chitkul, we’ll first visit The ISBT Camp, also known as Baspa Valley Adventure Camp located in Rakchham of Baspa Valley, which provides an immersive experience with its idyllic location on the banks of the Baspa River surrounded by towering snow-clad mountains.

Visiting Baspa Valley leaves visitors with a profound sense of peace and awe, deeply rooted in the untouched natural beauty of the region. The air is extraordinarily fresh and pure, contributing to a feeling of revitalization and calm. Walking along the riverside you will feel a magical stillness, where the sounds of flowing water, chirping birds, and gentle mountain breezes create an immersive sensory experience.

Then, we would pay reverence at the Kagyupa Temple, which is an ancient and spiritually significant Buddhist monastery dedicated to Shakyamuni Buddha. It holds a beautifully preserved idol of the Buddha and features intricate carvings, including the four Directional Kings depicted on the temple doors, symbolizing protection from all sides. By visiting this temple offers an ambiance where one can absorb the local religious traditions and admire traditional Himalayan Buddhist architecture.

Our next stop would be at Hindustan Ka Aakhri Dhaba. This famous eatery is celebrated for serving authentic Himachali flavors in a rustic, no-frills setting. Here, travelers can indulge in traditional dishes such as Siddu, Madra, and other local delicacies prepared using fresh regional ingredients, providing a delicious insight into the culinary culture of Kinnaur and Baspa Valley. This dhaba is also renowned for its warm, welcoming atmosphere, making it a favorite stop for road-trippers seeking genuine, hearty mountain food.

Chitkul, is also renowned for having the cleanest air in India, according to a study by IIT Delhi. So, get ready to breathe in the cleanest air in India. Life in Chitkul is characterized by a slow, peaceful rhythm in harmony with nature, where locals farm high-quality potatoes, apples, and walnuts that thrive in the fertile soil and adaptive climate.

After soaking in the charm of Chitkul, we head back to Shimla. The trip may come to an end, but the memories etched in your heart—they’ll stay for a lifetime.

The best months to visit Chitkul are from May to October, when the weather is pleasant and the roads are accessible. During this period, daytime temperatures typically range from 14°C to 25°C, offering comfortable conditions for sightseeing and trekking. The weather is generally clear with occasional afternoon showers in monsoon months..

FAQs

What Will Be the Group Size for This Chitkul Tour?

We prefer a smaller group size consisting of only 15-18 participants. The reason being that smaller batches are better in terms of collaborative group experience and trip coordination as well. You’re more likely to gel up with everybody in a short group as compared to a group that has more participants in number.

Who All Will Be Accompanying The Group During The trip?

We have fully qualified and functionally trained Trip Leads, Assistant Trip Lead, Driver accompanying the group during all our journeys. Apart from that, Local Guides and Porters (personal expanse) will also be tagged in if required on a trip/trip.

What Will Be the Type of Accommodation on the trip? What Will Be the Type of Accommodation on the trip?

It depends on the tour. Sometimes, we stay in Hotels, Camp and sometimes we prefer Homestays as well. The information about the full plan will be shared with you post the booking. Additionally, if you have any doubts, you can call any of our representatives to get more information on the same.

What Necessary Items Should I Pack For The trip?

Once your booking is confirmed, an email confirmation will be delivered to you which will include all the necessary information including booking details, trip details, and a brief packing list.

Do I Need to Buy trekking Shoes For The trip?

"Since we do not have any trekking to do while on the journey, you might not need tripking shoes specifically. But still, a good pair of shoes that have proper soles and are equally comfortable is recommended.

You might need a good pair of shoes when traveling to Dhankar Lake and Chandratal lake. A Quechua or forclaz shoes available at Decathlon will also do."

What Are the Washroom/Toilet Facilities on the trip?

We will be staying in Hotels, Camp and Homestays-we have constructed washrooms with proper running water and sanitation facilities.

How Many Travelers Will Be Staying in One Room?

We offer both Double sharing and Triple Sharing rooms. Depending on the package you book, you will be provided with the accommodation accordingly.

How Can I Book a Trip With You?

After selecting the trip, you can book by clicking on the book now button or you can contact us and we will guide you through the booking process.

What Type of Food Is Served During the Trip?

We provide nutritious, hygienic, and healthy food during the trip. But in case, you have some preferred food type such as Jain Foods, Only Vegetarian or any other type then we can make arrangements beforehand. But make sure to inform the same to your handler at the time of booking.

How to Get Safe Drinking Water on the Trip?

Himalayan water is considered the purest water and safe to drink. But for safety purposes, we sometimes boil the water and then use it for drinking and cooking. In case you find any clean water on the trip, make sure to fill your bottles with the same. Do not try out water that is stable, always go for running water.

Can We Change the Itinerary?

Yes, you can give suggestions. We will look into that and if we find it feasible then we will apply it as well.

Can You Customize the Trip According to My Preferences?

Yes, we can customize any trip as per your preferences. Once you show interest in the same, a dedicated handler from JustWravel will be assigned to you for the same.

Do You Prefer I Should Bring Some Medicines With Me?

Yes, it is advisable that you carry your own medication on the trips. Although, for common symptoms and even more, we have first aid boxes and all our trip leads have basic knowledge about basic paramedics practices.

What Will We Do if It Rains?

If it starts raining slowly while tripking then we will continue our trip as per the plan. Your poncho will keep you dry. In case if it is raining heavily then we will try to find any shelter and wait for the rain to stop or slow. If it rains at the campsite then there would not be any problem because all our living tents, kitchen tents, and toilet tents are waterproof. You will stay dry inside.

Can I Take My Child Along on This Trip? What Is the Age Limit?

It depends on the difficulty level of the trip/trip. The minimum age for eligibility is 14 years.

Being The Only Girl In The Group, Will The Journey Be Safe For Me As Well?

Yes! You should board with us on the departure date without any hesitation being the solo girl traveling alone. The reason is that we will make sure to take care of your experience during the whole journey. Additionally, all our trip leads are trained to deal with a number of situations and they’ll be there for you during the trip.

What Type of Ground Transportation Will Be Used on the Trip?
