Mumbai to Welcome Its First Elevated Forest Walkway at Malabar Hill

Malabar Hill in Mumbai is set to unveil its inaugural elevated forest walkway, courtesy of the Brihanmumbai Municipal Corporation (BMC). The project comes with a price tag of Rs 25 crore and is designed to attract tourists while providing locals with a distinctive walking opportunity.   Taking cues from the forest walkways in Singapore, this venture is expected to debut in the vicinity of the New Year.    

The pathway stretches for 705 meters, connecting Kamala Nehru Park to the Doongerwadi woods. Entry and exit can be found at Siri Road, located behind Kamala Nehru Park. Spectacular views of the Arabian Sea and Girgaon Chowpatty can be enjoyed from the walkway. It is constructed mainly of wood, with minimal concrete used to maintain the natural water flow on the hill and allow wildlife to move freely.   

There is a designated birdwatching area and a glass-bottom viewing platform, making it a one-of-a-kind attraction. The project was initiated in 2022 after winning the tender in 2021 for Rs 22 crore, however, expenses increased to Rs 25 crore due to various taxes, including GST. The construction lasted over two years due to the restricted working hours in the silent zone of Malabar Hill. At present, 90% of the main construction work has been completed, while additional tasks like electrification, painting, and the construction of restrooms and ticket counters are still in progress.   

This initiative aims to enhance the local tourism industry and provide residents of Mumbai with a fresh location for leisurely strolls in the mornings and evenings. The infrastructure is designed to accommodate individuals with disabilities, and no vegetation was removed during the building process.  The elevated walkway is expected to attract both city residents and tourists with its environmentally conscious design and picturesque views.
