Thanesar (sometimes called Thaneswar and, archaically, Sthanishvara) is a historic town and an important Hindu pilgrimage centre on the banks of the Saraswati Ghaggar river. Thanesar is in Kurukshetra district and Kurukshetra's urban area now merges with Thanesar.

The name Thanesar is derived from its name in Sanskrit, Sthanishvara which eans Place/Abode of the Lord.  Thanesar derives its name from the words "Sthaneshwar" which means "Place of God." 

Thanesar, just adjacent to Kurukshetra, is a place of importance from archaeological point of view. An archaeological site museum, a first-of-its-kind in Haryana, has been set up here to enlighten people about the history of Thanesar, which was revealed by archaeological excavations carried out here by the Archaeological team.

Many varied interesting things have been unearthed from the mound, such as stone and terracotta sculptures, coins, ornaments, ritualistic objects, etc.
