Overview
Kharagpur is an important industrial city in Paschim Mednipur. It is multi-cultural and cosmopolitan city. It is known to be an important educational, industrial and commercial centre. The first Indian Institute of Technology (IIT) was founded in Kharagpur as early as in May 1950.
Kharagpur has a Book Fair ("Kharagpur-er Boimela" in Bengali) which started in 2000 and happens every January. A Flower Fair ("Ful Mela" in Bengali) is also organized every year.
Kharagpur has a tropical wet and dry climate. Winter here is quite pleasant so it is an ideal time to visit this city. Winters are generally from October till February.
