Overview

Itanagar is the capital of the north-eastern state of Arunachal Pradesh. It is situated at the foothills of Himalayas and it gets its name from 'Fort of Bricks' (brick is called 'ita' in the Ahom language) which is situated in the heart of the city. The township is situated at 350 m above sea level. It represents a rich mixture of archeological wonders and institutions of great socio-cultural significance.

Owing to its mystique appeal and modern attitude, the city draws attention of tourists from round the globe. It is located in the shadow of the Himalayan ranges, which has snow covered peaks on the north-eastern side. On the other hand, the widespread stretch of the plains of the Brahmaputra River adjoins the city from the southern side.

The city is also identified as Mayapur, erstwhile capital of the Jitri dynasty, established in the 11th century. Ita Fort, the chief historic testament of the region, dates back to that era. One of the major historic testimonies, the Fort of Ita, was built during the 14th or 15th century by King Ramachandra.

Itanagar, is one of the two regions of the 'Land of Dawn Lit Mountains', the other being Naharlagun. Rich culture, tribal heritage and values dating back to several centuries are some of the most distinguished things to witness.

Itanagar and its adjoining areas are mainly populated by people of  the Nyishi tribe.Other tribes in the region are Adi, Galo, Apatani. With a view to save regional tradition and culture, the province was restricted to tourism till few years ago. The region is a dwelling place of diversified English, Aptani, Hindi, Assamese, Nishi and Adi speaking communities.

Getting to Itanagar is easy. It is well connected by road and air. There is a helicopter service from Guwahati. National Highway 52A connects Itanagarg to Assam and other parts of India. There are regular luxury bus services(overnight, approximately 11 hours) between Guwahati and Itanagar. Arunachal State Transport runs an extensive service throughout the state. The nearest railway station is Harmuti in Assam.
