Kalyan is a city in Thane district of Maharashtra. It lies in the Konkan division. It is the 9th largest city in the state and 28th in the country.
Kalyan in Marathi language means Welfare.
Over the years Kalyan has been attacked by various foreign powers like the Mughals, the Portuguese, and the British; it was the Marathas who defended this land by these foreign invaders.
The city of Kalyan is well connected by road and railway. Kalyan railway station lies on an important railway route between Mumbai and Karjat. One can also travel to Kalyan by the local train. The roads are also very well connected to the nearby cities of Mumbai, Thane and Nashik. The nearest airport is Chhatrapati Shivaji Maharaj International Airport, Mumbai; which is around 56 km from Kalyan.
Auto rickshaws are the best means of transportation in Kalyan as the buses are usually very crowded. Kalyan lies very close to the shoreline of the Arabian Sea and experience a humid climate in summers. There is heavy rainfall in monsoon; thus making winters the best time to visit Kalyan.
The very famous personality from Kalyan is Anandi Gopal Joshi, the first Indian female physician to obtain a degree in western medicine.
Some popular temples in Kalyan are Titwala Ganapati mandir, Ambernath Shiva temple, The Birla temple of Shahad, Trivikram, and Ram mandir. Trivikram and Ram mandir is the 17th-century temples built in the Peshwa styled architecture.
The historical monuments of the region include the Shubhedar wada, Malang gad, and Durgadi fort.
The Durgadi fort and its fortifications were built during the era of Shivaji Maharaj. The fort and its walls encloses an area of approx. 70 km and there are 4 -5 gates to this fort.
Ganesh ghat is a popular area amongst the locals as one can also view the Kalyan creek from here. Other popular tourist attractions are Acharya Atre Rangamandir (theatre) and Metro junction mall (5th largest in the country).
Other tourist attractions near Kalyan include the Bhivpuri waterfalls and the Kaala Talav (Also popularly called as Kalyan lake). Malshej Ghat, a local favorite monsoon getaway is also located near Kalyan. The ghat offers the best of Western ghat’s view in monsoon, housing a number of cascading waterfalls, and low monsoon clouds.
