Ziro is a quaint old town in Arunachal Pradesh, you need to climb steeply into way hills to reach Arunachal's most beautiful hill station, home to the Apa Tani tribe and famous for its pine hills and rice fields. Ziro is situated on a plateau and is the headquarters of Lower Subansiri District. In a meeting of the Archeological Survey of India in December 2012 it was shortlisted for inclusion in the tentative list of the World Heritage Site.
The landscape of Ziro is astounding , with hills and forests all around you. The Apa Tani tribe is a unique Arunachal tribe and one of the rare ones that are not nomadic in nature. They cultivate wet lands and were famous for their facial tattoos; practice of the latter is stopped recently.
The rivulets help the famous paddy-cum-pisciculture cultivation, itself is a tourist attraction. Terrace paddy fields present a unique system of poly culture and water management of the Apa-Tanis. During the agriculture season, tourists can witness the paddy (rice) cum fish culture which is the practice of rearing fish in the rice fields.
The Ziro Putu is a hillock at old Ziro where there was an Army cantonment in the Sixties. Wravelers can have a bird's eye viewof Ziro valley from here . The airstrip is also located at the foot of this hillock..
Tourists keen on trekking can explore the Talle Valley, which showcases diverse flora, ranging from sub-tropical to alpine. Its dense vegetation has giant silver fir trees, a variety of rhododendron, orchids, ferns and bamboo. this is about 32km north east of Ziro and makes a perfect trekking route. This is also a rich habitata of many unique and endangered plants and wildlife. The highly endangered clouded leopard can be found here.
Breeding of high altitude fish is done at fish farms near Hapoli town, close to Ziro and also worth a visit. In the wake of the unique tourism opportunity that the Ziro valley offers, NABARD has initiated various eco-tourism measures in the region.
