Malda, a famous district of West Bengal, is the biggest producer of excellent quality of jute in India. It is also known for mango production and silk manufacture, which also happens to be the main economic activities. The special variety of mango is popularly known by the name of the district and is exported across the world. Besides this, city is also famous as an important distributing centre for jute, rice and wheat. The holy river Ganga also makes its first entry in West Bengal though Manikchak of Malda. The city is prone to flood as it is a low lying basin.
Summer season in Malda commences from March and lasts up to May. During summers the weather is extremely hot and sultry. So these months should be avoided.
Malda Malda is the gateway to North Bengal. Previously it was known by ‘Gour-Pandua’. The capital of Malda District is also called Malda. Malda is the entry point to Siliguri which is the entrance to North Bengal from the southern part of West Bengal. Malda is a twin town of English Bazar & Old Malda, separated by the River Mahananda. English Bazar is more modern of the two, with almost all hotels & restaurants. The surroundings of Malda town are immense importance to the archaeology of India. Some of the famous places which you can visit in Malda are – Gour, once the capital of Bengal. The original footprints of Lord Mohammad are preserved here. You can see Firoz minar, Chika Masjid, Qutwali Gate, Baro Shona Masjid, Qudum-e-Rasul in Gour. Next, you can visit Pandua where you can visit Adina Masjid, Gol Ghar, Eklakhi Masjid & Adina Deer Park there. There are also many places to see here like Jagjivanpur, Johuratala Kali Bari, Farakka Barrage etc here. The view from the other side of the entire dam will surely give you goosebumps. An open air restaurant is also available here. The mangoes of Malda are world famous. Kantha Stich sarees are very popular among the ladies throughout the world. Malda is well connected by railways. There are some direct trains from the local main station, i.e. Malda Town; connecting Bangalore, Chennai, Bhubaneswar, Kolkata, Dibrugarh, New Delhi, Guwahati etc. Malda Town lies on National Highway 34, and all buses plying from Kolkata to Siliguri in the North will give a halt at Malda. By road it is 332 km away from Kolkata, the capital of West Bengal. Regular buses ply between Kolkata (Esplanade Depot) and Malda. Buses are operated by NBSTC, SBSTC and CSTC. Nearest airport to Malda is Netaji Subhash Chandra Bose International Airport in Kolkata.
